[KB7654] Deploy or upgrade ESET business applications using ESET PROTECT or ESET PROTECT On-Prem

Issue

  • Upgrade ESET Endpoint Security, ESET Endpoint Antivirus, or ESET Server/Mail Security applications to the latest version
  • Deploy ESET business applications to clients remotely using a Software Install task

Solution

Required user permissions

This article assumes that you have the appropriate access rights and permissions to perform the tasks below.

If you are unable to perform the tasks below (the option is unavailable), create a second administrator user with all access rights.

ESET Server Security and ESET Mail Security applications

ESET Endpoint Security for Windows is selected as an example in the screenshots below. However, the same process applies to the ESET Server Security and ESET Mail Security applications.

  1. Click TasksOperating SystemSoftware InstallNewClient Task.

  2. In the Basic section, type a name into the Name field. The Description field is optional. The Task Category and Task drop-down menus will automatically be set to All tasks and Software Install, respectively. Click Continue.

  3. In the Settings section, under Package to install, there are two options to select the package that will be installed on target clients: Install package from repository or Install by direct package URL.

    • To install a package from the repository:

    1.  Verify that Install package from repository is selected. Select the operating system (in this example, Windows is selected) and click Select below Choose package from repository. In the Choose product window, select the product and the language from the Language drop-down menu. Optionally, you can expand Customize more settings, where you can select the specific product version. Check for the latest version of your ESET business products. Click OK.

      Linux installations

      You can add the --skip-license parameter to the Installation parameters field to skip the display of the ESET End User License Agreement (EULA).

      Do not use this parameter if you want to view the EULA before agreeing to it.

      1. The check box next to Allow to install the latest product version for which the EULA is accepted is pre-selected. Deselect this check box if you do not want to install the latest version of the chosen product. Click the license below the ESET license to change it. Optionally, select the check box next to Activate ESET LiveGuard to enable this functionality (review the note and license below). Select the check boxes next to Enable The ESET LiveGrid® feedback system (recommended) and next to Enable detection of potentially unwanted applications. Select the check box below Automatically reboot when needed and configure the Postpone and Allow user to cancel the action settings if needed. Proceed to step 5.

    • To install a package by entering the target URL:

    1. Check for the latest version of your ESET business products.

    2. Select Install by direct package URL, type or copy/paste the package URL into the corresponding field. Only click Select below ESET license when installing a new product or upgrading products that are not activated, or if you want to change the license currently in use to a different license from the list of available licenses. Select the check box next to I accept the End User License Agreement. Select the check box below Automatically reboot when needed and configure the Postpone and Allow user to cancel the action settings if needed. Proceed to step 5.

  1. Click Summary → Finish.

  2. When prompted, click Create Trigger.

  3. Type a name for the trigger into the Trigger Description field and click Continue.

  4. Click Add targets. Select the check boxes next to the computers or groups to which you want to send this task and click OK.

  5. Click Trigger, select a Trigger type from the drop-down menu and click Finish.

  6. Send an activation task to the computers on which you installed ESET endpoint or ESET Server/Mail Security products so that they can begin receiving regular updates.

    Restart after the upgrade is complete

    Users must restart the client computer or server after the upgrade, if automatic reboot option hasn't been selected in the Software Install task.

    macOS users

    System Extension Blocked messages can be resolved by updating system preferences.

ESET Server Security and ESET Mail Security applications

ESET Endpoint Security for Windows is selected as an example in the screenshots below. However, the same process applies to the ESET Server Security and ESET Mail Security applications.

  1. Open the ESET PROTECT On-Prem Web Console.

  2. Open the Tasks view: if needed, click the expand icon () at the bottom left of the page to expand the navigation panel. Click Tasks. Click Operating SystemSoftware InstallAdd → Client Task.

  3. Under Basic, update the task name and type the description if needed. Verify that Software Install is selected in the Task drop-down menu. Click Continue.

  4. Under Settings, choose how you want to obtain the installation package. Below Package to install, select either Install package from repository or Install by direct package URL.

  5. Proceed according to the selected option:


    Install a package from the repository
    1. Below Choose operating system, select the operating system according to the device where you want to deploy or upgrade the business application. Below Choose package from repository, click Select.

    2. In the Choose application dialog box, select the application and the installation language. Click OK. If needed, you can click Customize more settings to select a specific application version. Check for the latest version of your ESET business applications.

    3. Note the check box below Install the latest version and deselect the check box if you do not want to install the latest version of the application.

    4. Below ESET subscription, check the preselected subscription. If needed, add or change the subscription to use, or remove it: click the remove icon (x) next to the selected subscription.

      Do not use a subscription when upgrading a previously activated application

      If you are creating a task to upgrade an application that is already activated by a subscription, do not use a subscription within the task.

      If you do not have any subscriptions available and you need one, add subscriptions in ESET PROTECT On-Prem.


      Add or change the subscription

      1. If needed, click the remove icon (x) next to the selected subscription.

      2. Click Select below ESET subscription.

      3. Select a subscription and click OK.


    5. If applicable, select the Activate ESET LiveGuard check box if you want to activate ESET LiveGuard. For more information, see additional information about the ESET Subscription section.

    6. Review the Terms of Use and the End User License Agreement and confirm your agreement by selecting the respective check box.

    7. Review the Protection settings section. If you do not want to activate ESET LiveGrid or the detection of potentially unwanted applications, deselect the respective check box.

    8. Select the check box below Automatically reboot when needed to force an automatic reboot of the client computer after installation. Below Allowed action for device users, define if the computer users can postpone or cancel the reboot. Click Continue.


    Install a package by entering the target URL
    1. Check for the latest version of your ESET business applications.

    2. Into the field next to Install by direct package URL, type or copy/paste the package URL.

    3. If needed, below ESET subscription, add a subscription to use.

      Do not use a subscription when upgrading a previously activated application

      If you are creating a task to upgrade an application that is already activated by a subscription, do not use a subscription within the task.

      If you do not have any subscriptions available and you need one, add subscriptions in ESET PROTECT On-Prem.


      Add a subscription

      1. Click Select below ESET subscription.

      2. Select a subscription and click OK.


    4. Select the check box next to I accept the legal documents.

    5. Select the check box below Automatically reboot when needed to force an automatic reboot of the client computer after installation. Below Allowed action for device users, define if the computer users can postpone or cancel the reboot. Click Continue.


  6. Under Summary, review the task details and click Finish.

  7. When prompted, click Create Trigger.

  8. Under Basic, type a name for the trigger into the Trigger Description field and click Continue.

  9. Under Target, click Add targets.

  10. Select the devices or device groups where you want to trigger the upgrade or installation and click OK.

  11. Click Continue.

  12. Under Trigger, specify when the task should be triggered and click Finish.

  13. For a new deployment, activate the installed applications: create and trigger an activation task on the computers where you installed the ESET business applications.

    Restart required after an upgrade

    If an upgrade was performed and the automatic reboot option was not selected in the Software Install task, users must manually restart the client computer or server.
