[KB8829] Resolve increased CPU utilization or ekrn.exe process crashing caused by ESET Server Security for Windows Server

Issue

Solution

We have identified an issue in the Antivirus and antispyware scanner module that may lead to increased CPU utilization or, in some cases, cause the ekrn.exe process to crash.

There are still some reported cases of high CPU utilization, while ekrn crashes should be resolved.

In managed environments, the issue may still persist after the module upgrade because of the ESET Management Agent.  We are actively investigating this issue.

See the recommended workarounds below to resolve the issue.

Update modules

We recommend updating to module version 1627 in ESET Server Security for Microsoft Windows Server.

Issue not affecting all users

This issue may not affect all users. Module 1627 is available through regular updates, so affected users can receive the fix without switching to pre-release updates.

Follow these steps to update the modules:

Managed environments
  1. Create a Modules Update task.

Create a Run command task

If the issue persists after upgrading the module, restart your operating system to resolve the issue. If you cannot restart your operating system, see the instructions below.

Create a Run command task and run it on ESET Management Agents:

  1. Create a Run command task.

    Before you proceed

Before deploying the update across all workstations, test it on a few selected machines first.

    • Command for ESET Management Agents that are not password-protected:

      msiexec /i "C:\ProgramData\ESET\RemoteAdministrator\Agent\SetupData\Installer\Agent_x64.msi"/qn
    • Command for ESET Management Agents that are password-protected:

      msiexec /i "C:\ProgramData\ESET\RemoteAdministrator\Agent\SetupData\Installer\Agent_x64.msi" PASSWORD=type_your_password /qn
