[KB2813] Google Malware Warning—"Your computer appears to be infected"

Solution

Recently, Google has noticed suspicious behavior in one of its data centers and has identified a certain type of malware as the source of the infection. To protect its users, Google now automatically sends the following warning message to computers exhibiting behavior indicative of this infection:

About this warning message

The  warning message below is based on an analysis of unusual symptoms in your computer's outgoing traffic and does not necessarily mean your system is infected. Regardless, we recommend that you follow the instructions below to make sure your system is free of malware.

Beware of suspicious activity

If you are experiencing unusual system behavior during web browsing, or are offered "free antivirus software" for download, please be aware that this is probably "Rogue Antivirus Software" (i.e. malware disguised as antivirus software) trying to infiltrate your system. Do not download any such software and try to avoid any suspicious web pages until you have resolved this issue.

To ensure that your computer is free of malware, we recommend that you take the following steps:

  1. Update your ESET product

  2. Run a Computer scan

  3. Restart your computer

If you could not successfully remove the infiltration or still see the warning (see Fig.1-1) when opening Google, refer to the following ESET Knowledgebase article:
