[KB7148] Manually install Windows 10 Feature Updates on a Full Disk Encrypted (FDE) system


For version 4.9.0 and later of ESET Endpoint Encryption Client, the upgrade process is seamless. See: KB7122

The following instructions are intended for users who cannot upgrade to version 4.9.0 or who do not have Internet access on the computer they are updating.

The Windows Media Creation tool will download the latest Windows ISO and install the update using our Windows 10 Feature Updater Utility. The utility can be used to upgrade your machine from Windows 7, 8, 8.1 or an earlier version of Windows 10.

I. Download the Windows ISO

You can perform this step on any Windows PC.

  1. Download the Microsoft Media Creation tool from the following link: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=691209
  2. Run the installer, MediaCreationTool.exe, from the folder you downloaded it to.
  3. Select the Create installation media for another PC option and click Next.

  1. Windows 10 Setup will prompt you to enter the system architecture of the Windows 10 installation you require. If you are running the tool on the PC you are upgrading, or are upgrading multiple PCs with the same system architecture, you can accept the default choices. Otherwise, select the architecture for the PC you will be updating. Click Next.

It is essential that you select the appropriate Architecture and language for your existing system.

  1. Select to create either a USB flash drive or an ISO file and click Next. If you select an ISO file, then you will need to turn it into a bootable USB or DVD later. In our example, we will select ISO file.

  1. Select a save location for the Windows ISO file and click Save. We have selected the Downloads folder.

  1. Once the download has completed, open the DVD burner or click Finish. In this example, we click Open DVD burner to burn the ISO to a DVD.

II Install the Windows 10 Feature Update

This step must be completed on the PC you are updating. You will use the Windows ISO image DVD or USB you created in section I. The ISO can also be mounted on the machine you are updating.

  1. Download and Run the ESET Endpoint Encryption Windows 10 Updater matching the bit version of the system you are upgrading:

    On 64-bit systems: Windows 10 Updater x64

    On 32-bit systems: Windows 10 Updater x86 

  2. Click Go.

  1. Insert or mount the Windows ISO disc, locate Setup.exe in the Windows ISO and double-click it.

  1. When the Windows update starts, follow the steps to complete the Windows upgrade process. Your PC will restart several times during this process. You will need to provide the Full Disk Encryption (FDE) credentials each time the machine restarts.

  1. Click Install to begin installing the update.
