[KB7127] Upgrading Windows 8 on a machine using Full Disk Encryption

Solution

ESET Endpoint Encryption Client and ESET Endpoint Encryption Client Server are separate products from ESET Full Disk Encryption

The article below applies only to the ESET Endpoint Encryption Client or ESET Endpoint Encryption Server and not ESET Full Disk Encryption.

Visit ESET Full Disk Encryption support to view ESET Full Disk Encryption content.

Upgrading before encrypting a machine

We strongly recommend you upgrade Windows 8 to the latest point release before commencing Full Disk Encryption.  The latest point release is currently Windows 8.1.

It is not possible to upgrade a Windows 8 machine through point releases, for example upgrading from Windows 8.0 to 8.1 if it is using Full Disk Encryption.

Attempting to upgrade on a Full Disk Encrypted system will result in the upgrade failing and rolling back the changes made.

If you are not sure which version of Windows 8 you are using, Click to find the version of the machine you are using. The link will also direct you to a Microsoft article to help you identify the operating system manually.

To initiate an upgrade to Windows 8.1, click the Store tile from the Start Screen. In the Store, tap or click the 'Windows 8.1 update' link.  For more information about the benefits of this Windows edition and its installation, visit this Microsoft article: How to upgrade to Windows 8.1

Upgrading Windows on an encrypted machine

If you need to update to a new point release of Windows, you will first need to decrypt the machine, perform the Windows upgrade and then re-apply the encryption.
