[KB3034] Virus found in the Java cache directory—what do I do?

Issue

  • "ESET found a threat and can't delete it" notification
  • Your ESET product has detected a virus in the Java cache directory

Details

A  cache directory is a temporary storage location. When your browser runs an applet or application, Java stores files in its cache directory for better performance. Typically your system empties the cache directory on a pre-determined schedule, however if a virus is discovered in the cache directory we recommend that you clean the cache manually.

Solution

Before proceeding

Make sure that you are logged on to the Windows user account that is receiving threat notifications from ESET.

I. Clear the Java cache from the Control Panel

  1. On the infected workstation, clear the contents of the Java cache from the Control Panel by following the steps in the article below:
  2. If the problem persists, continue to Part II below.

II. Clear the contents of the Java cache manually

  1. On the infected workstation, navigate to the Java cache, located in following directory (where is the user name of the account):
    • Windows 7/8:
    • Windows XP: C:Documents and SettingsApplication DataSunJavaDeploymentcache

  2. Double-click the Cache folder to open it.

  3. Delete the contents of the Cache folder.

If the above steps fail

This is likely because you are not logged in as the Windows user whose Java Cache is infected. Please log on to the Windows user account that is receiving threat notifications from ESET and repeat the steps above.
