[KB9008] Recommended upgrade path for major macOS releases and ESET applications for macOS

Issue

• After upgrading to macOS 27 (Golden Gate), your ESET Cyber Security or ESET Endpoint Security for macOS may not start if the installed application version does not support macOS 27
• Recommended upgrade procedure for a major macOS release
• The ESET application for macOS will not start on the new macOS

Solution

This issue can occur when macOS operating system is upgraded before the ESET application for macOS is updated to a compatible version. Affected users may be unable to launch the ESET application until a supported version is installed.

Recommended upgrade procedure for a major macOS release

1. Wait before upgrading macOS to the new version until ESET releases an application version that supports the new operating system. Currently, the supported ESET application version for macOS 27 is 10.0.

2. Depending on the ESET application for macOS update settings:

   • If automatic application updates are enabled, the new version will be downloaded automatically. There are two upgrade options:
     • Upgrade immediately from the Update section in your ESET application for macOS.
     • Complete the upgrade during the next macOS restart.
   • If automatic application updates are disabled, you must manually update the ESET application for macOS from the Update section of the main program window. After the new version is downloaded, you can either install it immediately or complete the installation during the next macOS restart.

     Upgrade scenarios with a restart

     If you restart your Mac before Apple releases the new macOS, only the ESET application will be upgraded. If automatic macOS updates are enabled and you restart your Mac after the new macOS release, both macOS and the ESET application for macOS may be upgraded during the same restart.

3. When you have upgraded to ESET Cyber Security or ESET Endpoint Security for macOS version 10.0 or later, you can upgrade to macOS 27 at any time.

The ESET application for macOS will not start on the new macOS

If you upgrade to macOS 27 before upgrading the ESET application to a compatible version, and you are running an earlier ESET application version that does not support macOS 27 and does not have OS support enabled via Mac/Linux support module version 1706 or later (ESET Cyber Security version 9.0.6700.0 and ESET Endpoint Security for macOS version 9.1.3100.0), the ESET application may not start.

To upgrade your ESET application for macOS on the new operating system:

1. Manually download and install ESET Cyber Security or ESET Endpoint Security for macOS using the application installer.

2. Your existing ESET application for macOS does not need to be uninstalled first. Installing the latest version performs an in-place upgrade and preserves existing settings.
