[KB3442] Add a new Device control rule in my ESET Windows home product (8.x)

Issue

  • Create a rule to block or allow a device such as a USB flash drive or portable hard drive

Solution

  1. Open ESET Smart Security or ESET NOD32 Antivirus. How do I open my ESET product?
     
  2. Press the F5 key to access Advanced setup.
     
  3. Expand Computer and click Device control.
     
  4. If it is not already selected, select the check box next to Integrate into system. Restart your computer if you are prompted. (bookmark this article to return after you restart).
     
  5. After restarting your computer, click Configure rules.

  1. To configure a rule for a device that is already connected, click Populate, or click Add and continue to step 7 to select the device yourself.

  1. Type a name that does not use special characters for your new rule (use of special characters can cause rules not to work), select the device type if you have not already and then select Allow or Block from the Rights drop-down menu. You can make your rule more specific using the Vendor, Model and Serial Number fields (these fields are case-sensitive) but they are not required.
    1. By default, your device control rules will apply to all users and groups. To define specific users and groups to which you want to apply a rule, click Add under User List. In the Select Users or Groups window, you can filter your rule by object type, location and user name. When you are done making changes, click OK to close the Select Users or Groups window.

  1. When you are done making changes, click OK to close the Rule Editor window. Your new rule will be displayed in the Device Control Rules Editor window. Click OK to close the window and save your changes.
