[KB3017] Why should I upgrade to ESET Server Security for Microsoft Windows Server 8.x?

Issue

ESET renamed server products

In the latest 8.x release, ESET changed the name of ESET File Security products to ESET Server Security products.

Solution

ESET Server Security for Windows 8.x is designed specifically to protect servers (domain controller) in network environments.

ESET Business Edition users

ESET Business Edition products have been replaced by ESET Server Security (for servers) and ESET Endpoint Security and ESET Endpoint Antivirus (for workstations). See the following Knowledgebase article for more information:

ESET Server Security for Windows 8.x includes new features specific for server use. A key advantage is that recommended settings for installation to a server are built into ESET Server Security (see Automatic Exclusions below), so there is no need to set the "best practices" exclusions onto a server operating system or desktop computer used in a server role. This functionality one of several server-specific features included in ESET Server Security:

  • ESET Dynamic Threat Defense (EDTD): ESET Cloud-based service. When ESET Server Security detects suspicious code or behavior, it prevents further threat activity by temporarily putting it into the EDTD quarantine.

  • OneDrive scan: This is a new feature added to scan files placed in OneDrive cloud storage. It's available for the Office 365 business account.

  • Processes Exclusions: Excludes specific processes from Anti-Malware on-access scanning.

  • Automatic Exclusions: Includes automatic detection and exclusion of critical server files. All of the required exclusions are automatically set based on installed software and server roles (on restart).

  • New Advanced Setup Tree: Redesigned for more intuitive navigation. Settings are divided into Server protection sector (to manage all of the settings related to server protection) and Computer protection (to manage malware and infiltration protection on the host machine level).

  • e-Shell (ESET Shell): Command line control interface that offers advanced users more comprehensive administrative options.

ESET Server Security also includes some features not available in ESET endpoint products, such as:

  • Enhanced Log Viewer: More powerful options to search and sort log file entries.

  • SysInspector Integration: No need to download the stand-alone application as SysInspector is now integrated into the program.

  • Improved graphical user interface for streamlined management.

Upgrading to ESET Server Security

Existing Business Edition users can migrate to ESET Server Security for Microsoft Windows Server by contacting their local ESET office, partner or reseller and then following the instructions in the following articles, starting with 1 before continuing to 2.

  1. Upgrade from Business Edition to ESET File Security version 4.5.

  2. Upgrade from ESET File Security version 4.5 to version 6.

  3. Migrate from ESET File Security for Microsoft Windows Server 6 to ESET Server Security for Microsoft Windows Server version 8.

ESET File Security version 6 can only be managed by ESET Remote Administrator 6

If you are using ESET Remote Administrator version 5, you can still upgrade to ESET File Security version 6. There are two recommended upgrade scenarios:

  • Upgrade to ESET File Security version 6 and set up a dedicated ERA version 6 server.
  • Upgrade to ESET File Security version 6 manually and do not use with ERA.
