On-demand computer scan is very slow in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

Solution

If an On-demand scan takes longer than normal to complete under Microsoft Windows Vista or Windows 7, it may be due to incorrect permissions on the temporary file folder. If this is the case, the On-demand scan log (ToolsLog filesOn-demand computer scan) may show an error similar to this:

'C:\HPBIN\AddDevicePath.exe » UPX v12_m5~_ext - decompression could not complete (possible reasons: insufficient free memory or disk space, or a problem with temp folders)'

To address this error, verify that you have permission to write to the C:\Windows\Temp folder by following the steps below:

  1. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\Windows.

  2. Right-click the Temp folder and select Properties.

  3. Click the Security tab and then click Edit (If you have UAC turned on, you will need to confirm this action by clicking Continue).

  4. Select the Users group from the Group or user names section.

  5. Verify that the Allow checkbox next to Modify is selected. If not, select it to allow permission. Click Apply and then click Yes

  1. Click OK and then OK again to save the changes. On-demand scans should now finish at their normal speed.
