My automatic upgrade failed in ESET Smart Security or ESET NOD32 Antivirus—what should I do?

When upgrading to the latest version of ESET Smart Security or ESET NOD32 Antivirus, the installation fails to complete.

"Installation ended prematurely"
- When upgrading/installing ESET Smart Security or ESET NOD32 Antivirus, you receive the error "Service 'ESET Service' (ekrn) could not be stopped"

Solution
Occasionally, an automatic upgrade to the latest version of ESET Smart Security or ESET NOD32 Antivirus will fail. If you experience a failed upgrade, you can still transition to the latest version of your ESET product.
Prerequisites
Windows XP users: Make sure that you have Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) installed before you upgrade to new versions of ESET products. View instructions to install SP3.

Uninstall your existing ESET product.

Download the appropriate installer file.
- Perform a new installation of the latest version.
