Clear the Update Cache to resolve product update errors

Issue

  • You are unable to activate your ESET product after receiving an automatic upgrade.
  • Your ESET product displays the message "Virus signature database update ended with an error" as shown below:

Make sure you have the latest version of your ESET product

Many of the issues you might be experiencing with your ESET product have been resolved in the latest version. We highly recommend that you upgrade to the latest version.

  1. Verify that your internet connection is active by visiting the ESET home page. You must have an activate internet connection before you can download updates.
  2. Open the main program window of your ESET Windows product.

  3. Press the F5 key to open Advanced setup.
     
  4. Click Update, expand General, click Clear and then click OK.

Why is Clear update cache greyed out?

If Clear is greyed out (or otherwise unavailable), restart your computer and then attempt to update again (before you restart, click here to bookmark this article). After your computer has restarted, repeat steps 2-4. Clear should now be active.

  1. Restart your computer.
     
  2. Open the main program window and click UpdateCheck for updates.

Once you are able to receive updates the message Update modules are up to date will be displayed. If the issue persists, uninstall and reinstall your ESET product.

 


Version 8.x and earlier

Make sure you have the latest version of your ESET product

Many of the issues you might be experiencing with your ESET product have been resolved in the latest version. We highly recommend that you upgrade to the latest version. How do I upgrade to the latest version?

  1. Verify that your Internet connection is active by visiting the ESET home page.
    • If you do not have an active internet connection, you will need to restore your connection before you can activate your ESET product or receive virus signature database updates.
       
  2. Open the main program window of your ESET Windows product.


  3. Press F5 to open Advanced setup.
     
  4. Expand Update Settings and click Clear.

    Version 7 and earlier: Expand Update Update and click Clear.

Why is Clear update cache greyed out?

If Clear update cache is greyed out, restart your computer and then attempt to update again (Before you restart, click here to bookmark this article). After your computer has restarted, repeat steps 2-4, Clear should now be active.

  1. Verify that your Username and Password have been entered correctly and click OK.

  2. Restart your computer.

  3. Open the main program window and click UpdateOK. Once you are able to receive updates the message Virus signature database is up to date will be displayed. If the issue persists, uninstall and reinstall your ESET product.
