[KB7174] Repair the Full Disk Encryption Master Boot Record using the Recovery Tool

Issue

ESET Endpoint Encryption (EEE) Client and EEE Server are separate products from ESET Full Disk Encryption (EFDE)

The article below applies only to the EEE Client or EEE Server and not EFDE.

  • If the Master Boot Record (MBR) is overwritten, the Full Disk Encrypted (FDE) system may not display the pre-start login screen.
  • Use the Recovery Tool to rebuild the MBR.

Solution

If you have decrypted the system and the pre-start screen still displays

These steps should only be used to repair a Full Disk Encrypted system that no longer starts and does not present the pre-start login screen. If you have decrypted the system and the pre-start screen still displays, you should restore the Microsoft Master Boot Record

Repair the Master Boot Record

  1. Click the appropriate link below to download the Recovery Tool:
  1. Follow the instructions in the appropriate article to boot the system using the Recovery Tool.
    Repair the Master Boot Record on systems encrypted with client version 4.8 or later:

    To repair the Master Boot Record on systems encrypted with client version 4.8 or later, Recovery Tool Version 1.7.0 (Build 30) is required.

  2. Press the Return key.

  3. If the Master Boot Record is not found, type Y.

  4. The tool will search for the boot files.

  5. Type Y to repair the Master Boot Record.

  6. The Master Boot Record will be repaired. If you want to use the Recovery Tool to then decrypt the disk, restart your computer and start the Recovery Tool again. Otherwise, restart your computer.

Restore the Microsoft Master Boot Record

If you have decrypted the system and the pre-start screen still displays, restore the Microsoft Master Boot Record using the FixMbr.
