[KB7136] Why do I need an admin password in ESET Endpoint Encryption?

Issue

ESET Endpoint Encryption (EEE) Client and EEE Server are separate products from ESET Full Disk Encryption (EFDE)

The article below applies only to the EEE Client or EEE Server and not EFDE.

Keep your admin password safe

Decryption and recovery options require this password. ESET is unable to recover your password if it is lost.

Solution

When you start Full Disk Encryption (FDE) on a standalone system (not managed by Enterprise Server), you will be prompted to save an administrator password file.

The purpose of the password is to:

  • Act as an emergency password if you forget your FDE user login details.
  • Provide the ability to initiate decryption of a full disk encrypted machine.
  • Use our recovery software in the event of a Windows error.

The default filename of the admin password files is either 'adminpassword.txt' (version 4.6.4 and earlier) or 'adminpassword.htm' (version 4.6.6 or later).

Due to the importance of this password file, you should store it in a safe place. Make sure that you save this password file on another machine or unencrypted storage. It must be accessible in the event of a problem with the system.

You may print a copy of the password file for storage. The latest DESlock+ / ESET Endpoint Encryption includes the ability to print the file when starting encryption.

The password contained within the file is associated with the username admin.

To use the admin login, select Start System from the blue DESlock+ / ESET Endpoint Encryption bootloader screen and enter the username admin and the password from your admin password file.

All full disk encryption passwords are case-sensitive.
