A new version has been released

A new version of ESET Windows home products have been released. We highly recommend that you upgrade to the latest version.

  • Remember: ESET Windows home products version 9 and later use a License Key for activation. What is a License Key?


  1. How do I install version 9 of ESET Smart Security and ESET NOD32 Antivirus?

  2. I have a license for a previous version; will I be able to upgrade to version 9?
    Yes. Customers with an active license at the time version 9 releases will be able to upgrade for free. For detailed instructions on upgrading, see the following Knowledgebase article:
  3. After installing my version 9 ESET product I cannot activate it.  What should I do?
    Check to see that your License Key has been entered correctly: How do I enter my Username, Password, or License Key to activate ESET Smart Security/ESET NOD32 Antivirus?

  4. Can I install my copy of ESET Smart Security or ESET NOD32 Antivirus on multiple computers?
    You need a separate license for each installation of  ESET Smart Security or ESET NOD32 Antivirus on a physical or virtual machine. You will receive one license with the purchase of ESET Smart Security or ESET NOD32 Antivirus. For more information about ESET product licensing, visit the ESET Home Licensing FAQ.

  5. What is a 3-computer pack?
    A 3-computer pack includes 1 year of antivirus protection for up to 3 separate computers.

    If, during activation, you receive an error message (such as "Activation failed"), it is likely because you already activated your key when you installed your ESET product on the first computer. After activating you should have received a License Key, which should be used to activate all subsequent installations and reinstallations on all computers.

  1. What is the difference between ESET Smart Security and ESET NOD32 Antivirus?
    Both ESET Smart Security and ESET NOD32 Antivirus provide proactive detection of malware utilizing advanced heuristics, generic signatures and genetic technology to help protect from unknown threats. ESET Smart Security includes Anti-Theft, Antispam, Personal firewall, Banking and Payment protection and Parental controls in addition to the full compliment of threat detection technology included in ESET NOD32 Antivirus.

  2. Is there an ESET Smart Security or ESET NOD32 Antivirus Business Edition?
    The current business editions of these products are ESET Endpoint Security and ESET Endpoint Antivirus, respectively.


    ESET Smart Security and ESET NOD32 Antivirus are for home users and cannot be managed with ESET Remote Administrator, are not suitable for use with ESET server products and cannot be installed on Windows Server operating systems. For more information, see the following Knowledgebase article:

  3. What are the new and improved features in version 9?

    Banking and Payment Protection: Banking & Payment protection ensures that all online transactions are protected in a trusted and secured environment.

    Redesigned GUI: The new design provides better visibility and a more intuitive user experience.

    New Licensing: The version 9 licensing model has changed. A License Key has replaced the username and password for activation. The new licensing model uses a License Key. You can also use an Activation key or Serial number to activate your version 9 ESET product.

    Firewall Troubleshooting Wizard: The troubleshooting wizard will guide you through the troubleshooting process to correct firewall issues with specific applications or devices. See our Knowledgebase article for more information.

    Online Help integration: The documentation included in version 9 has been updated to use ESET online help.

  4. What are the system requirements for ESET products?

    Windows 10 May 2020 Update

    The Windows 10 May 2020 update may affect the compatibility of your ESET product on Windows 10 operating systems.

    • Home users: If your ESET product is version 10.1, 11, 12, or 13 you do not need to make any changes. Visit our Knowledgebase article for more information about the update.
    • Business users: The ESET product versions listed here are all compatible with the update.

    Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7, Vista, Home Server (Anti-Theft not available for Home Servers):
    1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
    512 MB (1 GB for Vista x64) RAM of system memory
    320 MB available space
