The ESET GUI does not appear in the Unity desktop GUI (Ubuntu default) and GNOME 3 (Linux Mint default). Even though the ESET GUI is not visible, the product does run in the background and is still protecting the system.

Solution

To see the ESET GUI, you need to change your user session to a supported Desktop shell in Ubuntu: GNOME, GNOME Classic or GNOME Classic (No effects).

These three Desktop session options are only available to current Ubuntu users. For new Ubuntu users, see the instructions here to install them.

Current Ubuntu users using the Upgrade Manager

If you are a current Ubuntu user and have been upgrading through the Upgrade Manager as the new versions have been released, you can change to a supported Desktop shell from your login screen.

  1. If you are already logged in to Ubuntu, click the session menu at the top-right of the notification area and then click Log Out to get to your login screen.

  1. Before logging in, click the cog/gear icon to display Desktop shell options and then select one of the three supported options GNOME, GNOME Classic or GNOME Classic (No effects).

New Ubuntu users

If you are a new user of Ubuntu (11.04 or 11.10), the three Desktop session options GNOME, GNOME Classic or GNOME Classic (No effects) are not available. However, you can install them through the standard Ubuntu repositories using a command executed in the Terminal. If you prefer to use KDE Desktop session for Ubuntu, follow the instructions in Method 2 below.

Method 1: Install Gnome shell
  1. Open a Terminal window by clicking ApplicationsAccessories  Terminal.

  2. Using the root user privileges, type the following command and press Enter:

  3. Type in your password when prompted and press Enter. The cursor will not move as you type.

  4. When asked to continue type Y, and then press Enter.
