[KB2950] Enable Host-based Intrusion Prevention System (HIPS) in ESET home and small office products for Windows

Solution

The Host-based Intrusion Prevention System (HIPS) protects your system from malware and unwanted activity attempting to affect your computer negatively.

HIPS utilizes advanced behavioral analysis coupled with the detection capabilities of network filtering to monitor running processes, files and registry keys. HIPS is separate from Real-time file system protection and is not a firewall; it only monitors processes running within the operating system.

Advanced users

Users can define a custom set of rules to be used instead of the default ruleset; however, this requires advanced knowledge of applications and operating systems and is not recommended in most situations. See Host-based Intrusion Prevention System (HIPS)—Advanced setup.

To ensure that HIPS is enabled on your system, follow the instructions below:

  1. Open your Windows ESET product.

  2. Click Setup → Computer protection.
