What is the Host-based Intrusion Prevention System (HIPS) in ESET Windows home products?

Issue

This article applies to the following products:

  • ESET NOD32 Antivirus
  • ESET Internet Security
  • ESET Smart Security
  • ESET Smart Security Premium

Solution

ESET's Host-based Intrusion Prevention System (HIPS) monitors system activity and uses a pre-defined set of rules to recognize suspicious system behavior. When this type of activity is identified, the HIPS self-defense mechanism stops the offending program or process from carrying out potentially harmful activity.

Advanced users

Users can define a custom set of rules to be used instead of the default rule set; however this requires advanced knowledge of applications and operating systems and is not recommended in most situations. See Host-based Intrusion Prevention System (HIPS)—Advanced setup.

To ensure that HIPS is enabled on your system, follow the step-by-step instructions below:

  1. Open your Windows ESET product.

  2. Click Setup → Computer protection

  3. Make sure that the slider bar next to Host Intrusion Prevention System (HIPS) is enabled. If HIPS has been disabled on your system, click here for instructions to re-enable HIPS.
