Existing customers with a valid business subscription for ESET Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange Server can upgrade to the latest version of the same product for free.

Before upgrading to ESET Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange Server version 8.x and later

ESET Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange Server can only be managed using ESET PROTECT On-Prem 8.0 and later. Upgrade to the latest version of ESET PROTECT On-Prem.
Perform a System State back up on your Microsoft Exchange Server. See the Microsoft Knowledge Base article for assistance.
Ensure your ESET Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange Server Activation Key is available. If you have lost this information or need to request your subscription information, visit the Lost Subscription page.
If installing ESET Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange Server on Windows Server 2016, check Microsoft Defender Antivirus compatibility with other security products. Windows recommends uninstalling Windows Defender Features and withdrawing from Windows Defender ATP enrollment to prevent problems caused by having multiple antivirus products installed on a machine.
Verify that you do not have any pending Windows Updates. If you do, this might cause the migration to fail.

I. In-place upgrade method

You can upgrade ESET Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange Server without uninstalling the existing version by installing the new version over the existing one. If you decide on this upgrade method, skip to Part III.

Before you proceed

You cannot have any pending Windows updates or restarts on your server.

If you try performing an in-place upgrade with pending Windows updates or restarts, the existing version of ESET Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange Server may not be removed correctly. You will also experience problems if you remove the old ESET Mail Security version manually afterward.

A server restart will be required to upgrade ESET Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange Server.

II. Uninstall earlier version of ESET Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange Server

You can export settings from your existing ESET Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange Server if you want to preserve the configuration.
Uninstall the earlier version of ESET Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange Server.

Errors during the installation

If you encounter errors when manually or remotely uninstalling ESET Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange Server, uninstall the ESET product manually using the ESET uninstaller tool.
Restart the server after uninstalling ESET Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange Server.
