Issue

  • When a Program Component Upgrade (PCU) releases for your ESET product, you can use it to automatically upgrade to the latest version
     
  • If you encounter an error after being prompted to upgrade your product, see .
     
  • You receive the message "Free Upgrade Available"

  • You receive the desktop notification (displayed in the lower right-hand corner of your screen) "New version available"

Details

When upgrading from previous versions of ESET to the latest, some settings will not migrate. The following settings do not migrate from versions 7 and 8 to version 9:

  • License credentials (Username and Password)—In version 9, a License Key is used for product activation. How do I get my License Key? (Home users).
  • User interface: Hidden notifications window—This option has been removed in version 9. 
  • Network: System integration.

The following settings are for migrations from version 8.0.319:

  • Update: Update rollback—The snapshot version number may default back to previous version. 
  • User interface: Alerts and notifications—This feature has changed in version 9 to 200 seconds. 
  • User interface: Context menu (only scan)—The context menu option in version 9 is now only enable/disable.

Solution

To upgrade your program to the latest version using the Program component upgrade (PCU), follow the steps below:

I. Upgrade your ESET product

  1. From the Free Upgrade Available window, click Upgrade now. Your ESET product will begin downloading and upgrading your product.

  1. Restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

You may need to activate your ESET product after restart. If you see the message Product not activated (see Figure 2-1 below), continue to part II. 

II. Activate your ESET product

After the restart, you may see Product not activated in your ESET product. If you receive the message to activate your product, follow the instructions below; if you do not, your upgrade is complete and no further steps are needed. 

A. Convert your Username and Password to a License Key (versions 8.x and earlier)

B. Type in your ESET License Key to activate

  1. Click Activate this product

  1. Type, or copy/paste, your License Key you converted in part A above into the License Key field and then click Activate

  1. Click Done
     

Troubleshooting

"ESET could not be updated ​automatically" or "Product update ended with an error"

If you receive the notification "ESET NOD32 Antivirus/Smart Security could not be updated automatically" following a Free Upgrade Available message, we recommend that you uninstall and reinstall your ESET product to resolve this issue.

To resolve this issue, run a virus signature database update and then restart your computer.
